DIET PILLS - THE NEXT GENERATION
As
Seen on 60 Minutes
(CBS) Each
year, people spend more than $40 billion on products
designed to help them slim down. None of them seem
to be working very well. Now along comes hoodia.
Never heard of it? Soon it'll be tripping off your
tongue, because hoodia is a natural substance that
literally takes your appetite away. It's very different
from diet stimulants like Ephedra and Phenfen that
are now banned because of dangerous
side effects. Hoodia doesn't stimulate at all. Scientists
say it fools the brain by making you think you're
full, even if you've eaten just a morsel.
Correspondent Lesley Stahl
reports.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hoodia is a bitter-tasting cactus-like plant. 60
Minutes was told that if it wanted to try hoodia,
it would have to go to Africa. Why? Because the
only place in the world where hoodia grows wild
is in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa. Nigel
Crawhall, a linguist and interpreter, hired an experienced
tracker named Toppies Kruiper, a local aboriginal
Bushman, to help find it. The Bushmen were featured
in the movie 'The Gods Must Be Crazy." Kruiper
led 60 Minutes crews out into the desert. Stahl
asked him if he ate hoodia. "I really like
to eat them when the new rains have come,"
says Kruiper, speaking through the interpreter.
"Then they're really quite delicious."
When we located the plant, Kruiper cut off a stalk
that looked like a small spiky pickle, and removed
the sharp spines. In the interest of science, Stahl
ate it. She described the taste as "a little
cucumbery in texture, but not bad." So how
did it work? Stahl says she had no after effects
– no funny taste in her mouth, no queasy stomach,
and no racing heart. She also wasn't hungry all
day, even when she would normally have a pang
around mealtime. And, she also had no desire to
eat or drink the entire day.
"I'd have to say it did
work,"says Stahl.
"Imagine
this: an organic pill that kills the appetite. Contains
a molecule that fools your brain into believing you
are full." Quote from BBC News Report, 30.05.2003.
Hoodia
Gordonii is derivative of a South African cactus plant
which is extracted (the process by which moisture
is removed to yield the powder) for use towards suppressing
appetite. Popular prescription medications like Phentermine,
work to achieve the same effect, but does it in such
a way that it is labeled as a controlled substance
by the FDA and DEA and as such, a Doctors Prescription
must be issued through a face to face consultation.
There are many suppliers of some form of Hoodia or
the other. A common misconception of branded Hoodia
is Hoodia H57. The “h57≤ means absolutely
nothing, and is simply a brand identification. Still,
there are many forms and brands of good quality Hoodia
Diet Pills out there. The key to a hoodia gordonii
appetite suppressant that actually works to its fullest
potential is to understand how the product in question
extracts the hoodia into pill form.
If any product claims 100% pure hoodia then beware
as there are key locations of the hoodia cactus plant
which are actually the only effective parts. If 100%
is used, then that particular supplement is also using
parts of the cactus plant which is essentially worthless.
The pure parts of hoodia are actually pretty expensive
on a wholesale perspective. A general rule of thumb
with hoodia is that you get what you pay for. Basically,
if a single bottle of hoodia product comes under $50,
you can bet that it contains poor quality parts of
the plant (edge creaslines, base of plant, etc, flowers
and stems.)
How
the Hoodia Extraction Process Works
The ONLY Hoodia Extract is 20:1. The 20:1 ratio refers
to the “wet to dry” ratio of the whole
plant to concentrated powder. You see, hoodia gordonii
contains quite an abundance of excess moisture that
needs to be removed in order to truely make an effective,
concentrated powder. Extraction is the process by
which that moisture is removed to yield the powder.
And to further understand the 20:1 ratio, 20 pounds
of the whole plant is concentrated to one pound of
the high quality powder used to make Phentramine.
What
this means is that Phentramine is a diet pill with
20 times more functional hoodia than had the the makers
of phentramine just ground the plant up, water and
all. When you buy Phentramine with Hoodia, you’re
getting all of the usable plant parts of the Hoodia
gordonii times 20, because Phentramine packed a greater
amount of the quintessential hoodia ingredients into
a powerful, concentrated powder.
This is exactly why the argument of 20:1 over 1:1
or 100% pure hoodia is almost a pure joke. It is CLEARLY
obvious that the 20:1 ratio is absolutely more effective.
As you can see, the 100% pure is just another marketing
deception ploy of these other manufacturers. The hoodia
landscape has been unnecessarily clouded recently
thanks to the misinformation circulating about concentrated
extracts and so-called “100%” (1:1) hoodia
powder. What snares people (and their pocket books)
is the fact that they see 100% PLUS a lower price.
But of course the price would be lower as it costs
less to manufacture low quality product and to basically
“skip” an essential part of high quality
extraction.
The common selling point for those propagating a 1:1
hoodia product is the notion that “more is better”
- which, when you think about it, actually benefits
a 20:1 concentrated extract. Because the logic behind
using the 20:1 concentrated extract is that, in supplementation,
it’s not practical to ingest as much of the
whole plant parts of hoodia as the San did to get
the potential benefits of the hoodia plant. In using
the concentrated 20:1 ratio, the makers of Phentramine
are able to pack 20 times the amount of usable hoodia
into their Hoodia Extract. Now, which do youi think
is better?

Hoodia
Gordonii is a leafless, spiky succulent which
grows naturally in the Northern Cape, a province of
South Africa. Hoodia is registered as a protected
species by the South African Nature Conservation and
farmers are granted a special permit allowing Hoodia
to be commercially grown and harvested for sale
to the consumer market. Hoodia takes 2 years
to grow and is now being grown in sustainable
quantities by South African farmers. It has become
widely known as the greatest appetite suppressant
of all time. Hoodia works where others have failed
